CHS Trekking

Five days & four nights doesnt sound like much...

until youre out in the wilderness!

Explore yourself and your surroundings in Hi-Sierra’s most action-packed and thrilling program, Trekking! Open to all Scouts and Venturers (male or female) 14 and up, this program combines backpacking, mountain biking, kayaking, and rock climbing within the intense and inspiring terrain of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Leave your Troop in Camp and your inhibitions behind as you take to the hills in search of limitless mountains and unforgettable ridge top views...

You will never forget this week! Our Trekking programs takes older, more experienced Scouts out of Camp and into the surrounding Stanislaus National Forest for biking, climbing, hiking, navigation, and other challenging endeavors. We begin and end in Camp. You will be challenged in the Sierra Nevada backcountry and develop teambuilding skills.

Trekking participants will begin the week learning, experiencing, and practicing new skills doing challenging High Adventure activities. We’ll climb on the Camp’s climbing tower and bike around before we venture into the wilderness. Due to the out of camp nature of the program, Scouts will need to be in moderate physical condition to enjoy this program. They must bring their own backpacking gear for the trek.

Participants need to sign up for Hi-Sierra’s Trekking prior to their arrival at camp. Troop-affiliated Scouts will not stay with their units during this week. The fee for this program applies to both Scouts and adults. Scouts and adults register for this program separate from the normal summer camp program. Like the Venturing Program, Trekking seeks to develop a sense of Truth, Fairness, and Adventure in the minds of its participants.

They’ll be in camp - you wont.

They’ll work on Merit Badges - you wont.

They’ll have just another week of summer camp -

youll have a week that changes your life.

Trekking Program elements:

Backpacking

There is no better way to get through untracked and unmarked forest than on your own two feet. Keep your gear light and your head high and the trip will be awesome. After learning the basics of using a map and compass we will set you out with the team for a challenging journey.

Mountain Biking

Abandoned logging roads of the Stanislaus National Forest make endless trails for mountain biking. During the week we’ll teach you basic bicycle safety skills and then hit the trail.

Kayaking

After a quick lesson in safety and technique, we’ll kayak across the beautiful Pinecrest Lake. Everyone must pass their swim-check at the swimmer level to participate!

Swimming

Enjoy an afternoon of swimming and adventuring at the Clavey River.

Climbing

Enjoy an introduction to the exciting world of rock climbing. Learn how to climb while enjoying some of the Sierra’s (and world’s) finest granite!

Initiative Games & Team Building

We WILL keep you entertained and challenged! Low-COPE team-building initiative games foster leadership, selfchallenge, and reflection in every participant.

Learning

Be ready to learn climbing basics, bicycle skills, knots, land navigation, low-impact camping, leadership skills, and water safety. The staff is trained to not only lead your experience but to teach you about it as well.

Cooking

Whether you’re grilling on a campfire or cooking over backpacking stoves, you’ll have a chance to enjoy some new dishes. Be prepared to show your cooking prowess as you prepare culinary delights with the group and staff.
